    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

    • Date of Birth: 07 March 1953

    STATEMENT IN SUPPORT:

During my 30 or so years' teaching English, I have continuously sought to develop new ideas for my lessons with the aim of maximising students' opportunities to practice and acquire their English language skills in all four areas. My efforts in this direction have included the following self-developed resources:

    • Twelve 2-hour comedy video lessons based on a popular BBC comedy series. Each lesson includes a half-hour video show (divided into several parts), vocabulary expansion exercises & worksheet tasks.
    • A 100-hour personally designed IELTS Preparation program supplemented with material from various recognised IELTS training publications.
    • A 150-hour, Business and Industrial Report Writing course for PT Badak an Oil and Gas Corporation in Borneo, Indonesia. This course included practice in memo-writing as well as report writing.
    • A Business Letter Writing course adapted from Company to Company.
    • An Academic Writing course adapted from recognised materials.
    • Personally-designed, debate-cum-discussion sessions (approx. 30 minutes per session) based on over 200 controversial topics and dilemmas.
    • A series of self-created puzzles, classroom games and competitions for all levels designed to reinforce previous learning.
    • A bank of over 100 presentation topics (General English).
    • A collection of over 70 discussion topics with prompts to bring discussions alive.

I am a firm believer that a course book is only as effective as the teacher utilizing it. I am convinced, therefore, that even though a textbook may have been first published several years ago, it can be as effective as, or even more effective than, material published more recently as long as an instructor can adapt it to maximum effect.

My teaching style is based on mutual respect and excellent teacher-student rapport. In my view these two factors are essential in bringing out the best in students and increases student self-confidence dramatically. The great majority of my lessons are student-based with maximum student participation and minimum teacher involvement.

I frequently reflect on my lessons and consider each one's success not so much in terms of 'what I have taught' but more in terms of 'what the students have learned and mastered'.

Recognised materials and methodologies with which I am familiar include:

    • QuickWork Series (Business based)
    • New English File Series (General English)
    • PET and KET Objectives (Exam Preparation)
    • The Cambridge English Course (old and new)
    • The Headway series
    • Getting Ahead (Business based)
    • Business Objectives
    • Business Opportunities
    • International Business Englishˇ
    • The English First series

I regard myself as an effective and professional instructor and personally feel that my many years of experience in TEFL more than compensates for my lack of a tertiary qualification. I consider myself a reliable, responsible, mature, sympathetic, and cooperative member of staff with a pleasant sense of humour.

I am accustomed to working long hours, split-shifts and to covering absent or sick colleagues at short notice with little fuss and no preparation time.

My references from previous employers will testify to the high value placed upon my services to each one's institution.

    EMPLOYMENT EXPECTATIONS:

I am currently seeking a position in which I can exploit all the knowledge and technical skills I possess in TEFL. I am particularly interested in Materials Design for ESP.

I am looking for a high calibre employer who is willing to offer me security, and an opportunity to further develop my teaching skills.

    SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION:

Besides socialising with friends and work colleagues, my interests range from current affairs to travelling to cross-cultural matters, due mainly to the fact that I am bi-lingual (English-Malay). I spend much of my leisure time reading novels and newspapers, watching documentaries, writing and playing chess.

I also enjoy computer-related activities and am familiar with both word processing and more obscure programs such as ftp and adobe.
